Galápagos, April 2026. In the Galápagos, factors such as noise from heavy rain, extreme heat, and humidity can reduce students’ concentration, directly affecting academic performance. In response to this situation, Saint-Gobain Imptek donated a thermal-acoustic and waterproof roof to the Carlos Darwin School, benefiting nearly 100 students and contributing to a more suitable learning environment.
The project incorporates high-performance technical solutions designed to withstand the archipelago’s extreme weather conditions. Using self-adhesive and reflective asphalt membranes such as Imperpol Ultra, Polibrea, and Superacryl, the new roof ensures 100% waterproofing, significantly reduces rain noise, and lowers surface temperatures by up to 30°C, resulting in energy efficiency and cost savings. This improvement directly impacts the thermal and acoustic comfort of the classrooms, creating a more conducive environment for learning and the well-being of children aged 3 to 11.
Prior to this renovation, the school’s metal roof amplified noise during particularly heavy rains in the upper part of the island, causing constant distractions in the classroom. This was compounded by extreme heat and leaks, which affected both the learning environment and the safety and comfort of students and teachers, highlighting the urgent need for a comprehensive solution.
“At Imptek, we believe that sustainability isn’t just talk, but a responsibility that is demonstrated through concrete actions. Improving this school means directly contributing to the well-being, safety, and future of its students. Our projects must leave a positive impact on communities,” said Juan Pablo Sotomayor, General Manager of Saint-Gobain Imptek.
The initiative took place as part of the 11th Saint-Gobain Imptek International Convention, incorporating a social component that went beyond the corporate event. As part of this initiative, the company also donated more than 100 children’s books, promoting a love of reading and fostering creativity from an early age, thereby strengthening a holistic learning environment.
“Initiatives like this demonstrate consistency between what we say and what we do. As part of Saint-Gobain, we seek to make a real impact in communities and build trust through concrete actions that contribute to sustainable development as part of our mission, ‘Making the World a Better Home,’” said Luis Vega, Director of Communications and Institutional Relations at Saint-Gobain LATAM North.
These types of initiatives not only transform the infrastructure but also have a direct impact on the day-to-day educational experience, improving the conditions in which students and teachers carry out their activities and strengthening the bond between the community and the school environment.
“Today we have safer and more comfortable spaces that allow our students to concentrate better and learn in decent conditions. Initiatives like this mark a turning point for our institution,” said the principal of Carlos Darwin School.
The project not only improves the school’s physical conditions but also promotes knowledge transfer by training local talent in the use of innovative waterproofing solutions, thereby strengthening the community’s capabilities. Through this initiative, Saint-Gobain Imptek reaffirms its commitment to education, student well-being, and the professional development of workers in the Galápagos and Ecuador.
